Would like to clarify that the Red Shoe Reel was written by Dan R. before WW2 in Kingsville for Angus D. MacEachen's homemade tanned "red" natural leather shoes made from the cows hide...no Shirwinn Williams red paint was used in the process. When he composed the tune he stood in the kitchen of his Aunt Mary's and told her husband Angus father of Alex Francis MacKay that I wrote my first tune while walking home from Angus D's I am calling it the Red Shoes after Angus D's homemade shoes.
This first composition was witnessed by Dan R.'s first cousin Florence MacKay Graham who is going stong at 96 !!!!

My heart is sad for she's leaving us today, though I know we'll meet again...
Your music has been an important back drop in my life for more than 2 decades now. I have followed you from your early days performing in Goose Bay, to Granville on the Green, to Halifax, Toronto and Belleville. It is a curious thing to feel so deeply, the loss of Raylene and to feel such sorrow for you and your family. Your music has provided me, and so many others, I am sure, with inner strength like when 'Movin' On' became my theme song during my divorce or how "Rise Again" was the first song I had to learn on guitar...Words cannot adequately express the joy and inspiration your music has given me...and I am just one of many who must be touched this way. Thank you all for sharing so much of yourselves. Thank you Raylene for the goosebumps whenever you sang. My deepest condolences to you all and especially to Colin and Raylene's 'Little Man', Alexander.

Hello!!!
Well, Iím a huge fan of the Rankinsí music and my Fiancee and I will be honeymooning all over Cape Breton Island. We marry on August 25th but donít expect to be in the vicinity until August 31st or thereabouts. As a fan of the Rankin Family, I was looking up where the Rankins call ďhomeĒ and found Mabou which doesnít seem too far off the main road (TransCan)! Additionally, out of pure curiosity, I Googled ďMull RiverĒ (as this is one of my all-time favorite songs) and saw that it is on the way to your beautiful town. Thatís when I discovered the Red Shoe Pub. Wow. Iím impressed and really want to visit this place. It seems like exactly what I am looking for on this trip. Music, fun, laughter, (drinking),  traditional fun. I have two questions...
1) Do the Rankins ever play there and what is your September Schedule like? And
2) Are there any accommodations in the close vicinity? I donít like to drink and drive and a place to rest my head in Mabou would be fantastic.
Thanks for your time. Your website is brilliant!

Had an awesome time at the pub in August. Stopped in for my son Easton's 8th's birthday. He asked if he could play his fiddle. Kimberley Fraser was kind enough to help him tune it before he played. Was even going to let him play a few songs in her set. He just one to play his one tune. This made his day and trip to Cape Breton over the top. He'll always remember his first performance of hopefully many at the Red Shoe Pub. He was hoping to see "the girls" as he calls them. Maybe next year.

hi, just to start by saying i love you guys.ive been living in alberta for the past 15 yrs now..not my choice of place to live...(work).i had the privilage of coming home for the first time since i left so many yrs ago.i wanted to travel around the cb island...i grew up around hubbards ns on the shore.i ate lobster and did all the kitchen parties as the only way my family would have it.(music and laughter)i even remembered i knew how to play the spoons.on my adventure home i came across the red shoe pub and came in to have dinner and relax.that i did.i had the most amazeing time ever.the food was fantastic, the beer was cold, the hospitality was second to none.the music was fantastic.i had secretly had tears in my eyes , i sat in awe and took it all in.i was always proud of my heritage but just then as the high pitch notes traveled the room and the people that were there were so friendly...i knew i was home.i never got to meet any of the rankins which has always been a dream of mine.ive watched their triumphs and falls over the years from so many miles away, always wanting to give them a big hug for when times are good and bad.the trip home made me realize that its time for me to come home.money is great but you cant buy with any amount ,the way i felt there...at that said god bless you all and may the lord put a huge circle of protection around your familys and grant you all the greatest treasures of life...love of your family, music and friends im looking forward to coming home.any welding jobs in mabou...lol....see you then.

As a child I lived in Mabou for a little while.I remember having to stand in a little shed in the winter at the bottom of our lane waiting for the school bus. I also remember going to a hall. White with Red trim then for some occasion. My time there was not very long. I have lived also in Orangedale. On the hill above the tracks in a green and white house with a the Hall family. I remember the general store at the bottom of the hill. I spent many a day on that bridge fishing, skating in the winter. Going to school and one of my good friends I have not seen in many many years I did not get to meet although I remembered her house and paid a visit. She was not home. )Shelly McKay)although I did visit Mabou and Orangedale a few years back.. Seemed as though I was stepping back in time. Now I live here in Toronto and as I sit here and watch the Rankins on a CTV special I had to stop by to say thanks for the wonderful songs and memories:

Cheers:

My husband and I were in Mabou for the 10th Anniversary of Celtic Colours in 2006. We had wonderful times and delicious food at the Red Shoe several times. We met and enjoyed Howie MacDonald there, whose CD I'm enjoying as I write!and Dwayne Cote. I am giving a slide show presentation and talk tomorrow on our time in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island at the Scottish Heritage Society meeting of which we're members. We heard Natalie MacMaster,Bela Fleck, Mac Morin and others play at Glencoe square dance on Oct.7!Alex, at Mabou Village where we stayed, was so kind to us and gave us the best advice on where to go. We miss the "joie de vivre" that you wonderful people have and hope to return.

Hi! I'm 13 years old and ever since my parents spilt up in 2005 my mom has been taking myself and my two sisters to cape brenton almost every summer. We've stayed in Mabou, Inverness and Pleasent Bay and everytime we go we eat supper at the red shoe pub every night. I'd never heard of the Rankin Family before and after the first visit there I began to love Celtic Music. We bought a CD and now for every second we are in Cape Brenton that CD must be played. It's a family Tradition. :D. The Red Shoe Pub is like our home away from home. It's not just the food we enjoy there it is the atmosphere. One night this year we had eaten supper at the rusty anchor but we decided to sit and have a cup of tea at the Shoe just to sit there and enjoy the music and the pub itself. Thanks for everything, the Red Shoe pub is one of my favourite places ever. Thanks!! P.S I've met Heather Rankin Twice. Teehee.

Also thanks to all the staff for helping us deal with our drunken inn keeper, for those of you who know Marvin Pickle Stabber from the Duncreigan Country Inn Of Mabou!! While the music was great, the food was hit & miss. The Red Shoe Panini was bland, as was the Burger. Under-seasoned. The wings were soggy and not spiced properly. The mixed greens, however, were very fresh - the buttermilk dressing was great! The Mac-n-cheese was very satisfying. Everything considered, the Red Shoe was a pleasant experience!

I will stop in The Red Shoe Pub. It sounds wonderful. I live in Maine but have a great love for Nova Scotia and the wonderful people there.

In the winter of 2001 I lived in Mabou from January through early May. I chose to live there in part because of The Red Shoe. I knew I could get good music there on the weekends. I understand that The Red Shoe is no longer open in the winter which I'm sorry for. I had many good evenings and Sunday afternoon making new friends and enjoying good music. Peace, Dale

I was unappreciative of the heritage that is Nova Scotia. I met my wife online, She in Halifax, I in Ottawa. My first visit to see her we went camping in Cape Breton- she introduced me to muscles and lobster. My unawareness of the beauty of Nova Scotia and particularly Cape Breton was, is and will ever be....NO MORE. A particular bonus for me has been the discovery that the Rankins are from Cape Breton. My wife and I are visiting New Foundland (Her home) by way of Halifax and hopefully will have time to visite The Red Shoe. Regardless of whether or not we have time this visit, with my retirement(in three years time) we will be relocating to Nova Scotia. At that time you can be darn sure we will make and nurture an aquaitance with The Red Shoe

She has an amazing voice, her recorded version of Sunset is nothing compared to her live performance. It really took my breath away. If you ever offer an unplugged version of that song, I will be the first to buy it. She has a great career ahead of her. Best of Luck.

Hi, We really enjoyed your concert last Monday night at the Centre in the Square in Kitchener. I 've been belting out your tunes in my car for years. It was a real treasure to hear your voices live again. We were there many years ago when you all sang with such live energy. I loved the way you were all dressed like regular people like us. It made me think that the girls would be people I would meet at a shower or at a local pub. It was a great show and we were singing all the way home. Thanks for all your efforts as I know it must be hard to be on the road when you have families at home. Bye for now.

It was a pleasure to see you all in concert once again. Saw you about nine years ago at the Pantages Theatre too. Our family just love your music. Heard about the pub and we're anxious to check it out sometime. Always enjoy going to the maritimes. Words cannot express how your music makes me feel. :)

Hi! I learned of this pub the other night at the Rankin Family Reunion Tour here in Vancouver. The people sitting next to me mentioned it so I had to find out more. If I get to that side of the country, I look forward to a visit for sure! As for the concert...wow! I never had the pleasure of seeing the Family perform live and I am thrilled I finally had the chance! What a wonderful show. :-) Thanks for the reunion tour and for providing me the pleasure of witnessing something I never thought I would! Good luck with the rest of the tour!
